LEARNING IS LIKE RUNNING

Mr. Goran Groza

Head of Commercial, Glovo, Belgrade, Republic of Serbia

“Hey EduEvo team, I am Goran Groza, currently Head of Commercial at Glovo working in Belgrade, the capital of Republic of Serbia.

At the beginning of my college career I was mostly interested in finance with an aspiration to test myself in the banking industry and that is how I got my first job at Wells Fargo Bismarck ND working under mentorship of Mr. Curtis Peterson (former Lehman Brothers senior management).

After returning from the USA I spent a few years in my home town playing for the local football club until 2017 when I decided to go back to school and get my 4 year diploma at FIMEK major Business Economics & Finance.

During my short college days at FIMEK only 1 year I attended a very intriguing course in Marketing held by professor Dragan Ilić that got me more interested in the marketing and commercial aspect of the business and less in finance.

When I started college I had a very simple traditional view of education. Always trying to learn but I did not spend much time implementing what I was being taught.

After having worked at 2 Banks (NLB Serbia and Wells Fargo USA) and 2 Startup companies I noticed that when you take a look at your education from a few years back it has a different and more holistic meaning than it had when I was at college.

The main reason I am saying this is because there is no school or college that when it comes to it can make a difficult decision for you. Education is not a product you can use to “GET THE JOB DONE”. Education is a tool you can use to make yourself a better professional. Education is where you learn how to make data driven decisions and where you learn a lot on how economies and people work. It is up to you than to use that as a stepping stone and an advantage in day to day business.

Currently I am working as a Head of Commercial with Glovo in Belgrade. Glovo is the first Spanish Unicorn (startup to go above 1 billion EU in evaluation).

After spending some time in a Romanian / British startup in August 2019 I decided to join Glovo and help launch operations in Serbia as Head of Sales.

During my stay at Glovo I expanded my views from commercial to more marketing, commercial and with the onset of COVID business sustainability.

After a year at Glovo I got promoted to Head of Commercial for Serbia and since then helped work on adopting the company’s market approach to COVID and creating a post COVID plan and go to market approach towards partners.

As of my current interest I am looking for a master’s program where I can learn more about Advanced Data Analytics in Business and help me become even more data driven when making decisions, plans and estimations.

In the short to mid-term I am committed to making sure Glovo gets clear market leadership in the Central Eastern Europe region and trying to learn as much as I can from the very fast paced industry and a tech company I am at.

Definitely I would like to learn a lot more about marketing and the go to market strategies for tech companies since I see that as an opportunity in the future because we see a shift in the European market from traditional industries to Tech & Sustainability industries.

My advice for new comers is to go out of your comfort zone because there you will truly have the opportunity to test yourselves and really make incremental changes and impact your education. One of the best ways to do that is to try and do that is to travel and study in different countries and cultures.

Learning is like running, the more you learn the more you will be able to learn in the future.

As a hiring manager I will tell you that it does not matter what education you put on your CV but what your education puts on you. And trust me quality education can be seen. If you are the smartest person in the room you are in the wrong room. If you are the best student at your school, you are the wrong school. “
